Our long-held privilege of alley garbage collection is being called into question. I have received word from the Solid Waste Department that our alleyways have become choked with vegetation, debris, etc. to the point where the garbage collection crews are having a tough time making it through the alleys to make their routes.

To put it bluntly, our alleys are beginning to turn into a jungle. In order to tackle this problem in typical Hyde Park style, we will need to get organized to most efficiently clean up our alleyways. The first step is that I will be driving through the alleys with Mr. Rhodes from the SWD to identify the worst situations and to prioritize them for cleanup. The second phase, and this is where you may come in, is to organize an elite crew (historically known as the Alley Cats) that has the know how, the spirit and pride in the neighborhood that we will need in order to fix this problem.

While it is each property owner's responsibility to keep the vegetation in the alley pruned back, we will need the more public spirited (and physically fit) to come forward to fill the gap left by inaction. If you have a pickup truck and/or a chainsaw that runs, you are automatically accepted into this crew. We will be having delicious refreshments (probably BBQ and suds) for those that accept this challenge.

If this sort of mission intrigues you, please send me an e-mail to: breeze99@texas.net or call me at 452-3850 for more info. We should be forming up this team by mid-July. I'll be keeping you posted on how we do.
