world. I assumed that I would easily be able to find, for example, a spool of thread. It's available wherever they sell fabric, isn't it? Likewise needles and pins. Everything you need for sewing will be together in one place, a group of logically related artifacts. What is "logically related", however, depends on the cultural context. I found places to buy fabric, but fabric is the only thing sold in those shops. For a spool of thread, I was referred to a bangle shop (yes, those narrow round bracelets). I have yet to find pins, although someone suggested I try a stationery store. Why is thread sold in a bangle shop? I don't yet know, but fortunately, I have time to learn. I'll be spending the next two years living in and learning about India, and I anticipate that it will only get more interesting.
