What: Volunteer Clean up of Hyde Park's Alleys
When: September 14, 2002, 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
Why: Because the Hyde Park Alleyways have become overgrown to the point where alley trash pickup may be discontinued soon.
Who: All Civic-Minded Hyde Parkers
Where: Volunteers for this effort should meet in the Hyde Park United Methodist Church parking lot at the corner of 40th and Speedway

The cleanout effort will focus on the Hyde Park alleys that are north of 38th Street and south of 45th Street. Volunteers should wear appropriate attire and bring loppers, clippers, machetes, etc. (extra if you have them). Additional labor will be obtained from First Workers in order to supplement the volunteers for this effort. Food and beverages will be provided after the cleanout has been accomplished.

For those that are appreciative of this alley cleanout and would like to help support future similar efforts but can't be there in person, we will gladly accept any donations to help us pay for this cleanout. Please send your donations to: HPNA Alley Cleanout Fund, PO Box 49427, Austin, TX 78765.

If you are a homeowner who has an alleyway that is choked with vegetation, the easiest way to help with our upcoming cleanout would be to trim back the vegetation near your home. This will dramatically reduce the time it will take us to clean out your alleyway.

Thanks again,
Hyde Park Alley Cats

Nominating Committee Announces Candidate Slate for October Election

The Nominating Committee chosen by the August General Meeting has announced a slate of candidates for the four officer positions in the Hyde Park Neighborhood Association (HPNA). These are:

  • Co-President: Gary Penn
  • Co-President: Bruce Nadig
  • Secretary: Glen Coleman
  • Treasurer: Mike Capochiano
Gary, Glen and Mike would continue in their present positions. Bruce would replace Bob Breeze who is retiring from the Co-President's position. The slate will be accepted or rejected by the vote of the Members at the September General Meeting. The election itself will be a the October General Meeting and successful candidates will take office at the Fire Station Festival October 13, 2002.

Anyone with alternative candidates or anyone who would like to be a candidate themselves is welcome to propose such candidacy to the September General Meeting. Candidates and voters must be dues-paying members of HPNA, of course.

While Mike Capachiano is willing to continue as Treasurer he would like someone to take over the job of advertising marketing for the Pecan Press. This consists of accepting advertising copy from individuals and businesses that advertise in the Pecan Press and transmitting the copy to Bob Farr, our layout person who makes the neighborhood newsletter look the way it does. Anyone familiar with Pagemaker, Quark Express, camera-ready copy and the like would be very welcome addition to the HPNA | Pecan Press team. If that sounds like you please contact Mike at mcap@io.com or 467-9198 or contact Gary Penn at garypenn@swbell.net or 452-3103. We appreciate the professional expertise Mike has brought to the Treasurer's job as well as his hard work on Homes Tour ticket sales and would really like to be able reduce his work load from the advertising function.
