APD recently held their Commander's Forum. At the forum they
made a presentation on the prevention of auto burglaries. For some of
their slides the officers simply went to the parking lots of some shopping
malls and grocery store and looked inside cars. You would be amazed at the
things people leave in plain sight. They had pictures of wallets, check
books, purses, laptop computers, CDs... The list was endless. Some people
had gone to the trouble of putting their valuables on the floor or in the
back seat, as if that makes them invisible. The moral to the story was
simple: if you don't want your things stolen, don't leave them in your
car. I have gone to APD's headquarters building and read an endless number
of auto burglary reports. In every case, cars were broken into because
valuables were left inside. If you want to keep your things, carry them
with you. At a bare minimum put them in the locked trunk of your car (of
course, don't park your car then put your laptop, purse, etc. in the trunk
