Fire Station Festival 2002

The 28th Annual Hyde Park Fire Station Festival was held Sunday, October 13, at Station Number 9 located at 43rd and Speedway, following a children's parade from Shipe Park.
Once again the community gathered to commemorate the successful defense of the Station from budget cutters in 1972, and reaffirm its importance to the Hyde Park neighborhood now. This year's Festival saw the final appearance of Bob Breeze, outgoing Co-President, as Master of Ceremony. We all wish Bob well in his garage construction project at his place in the north

Chronicle to Hyde Park: "You're Number One!" Don't get a fat head, neighbors, but in the Austin Chronicle's 9/27 "Best of Austin" issue, good ol' Hyde Park copped the blue ribbon in the "Best Neighborhood" category. From said article, we quote:
"Were the Cold War still frosty, one could easily mistake the neighborhood called Hyde Park as some huge KGB training facility, where cultural agents are taught how to be perfect Americans. Lawns are perfectly coiffed and lightly peppered with Timmy's (aka Anatoly's) toys. Fresh-scrubbed cars are tasteful and discreetly middle class. The neighbors are friendly and mobile in an upwardly fashion. American? Heck, this dynamic, well-planned historic neighborhood is about as red, white, and blue as you can get. Da!"
Now, if you're anything like us, you might be wondering what da "Da" is all about; how the KGB fits into the picture; and whether the lawns are all that "coiffed," or the cars all that "scrubbed" -- but what the hey, the title is ours, and they spelled our name right! What's more, our 'hood took honors in a number of other categories, including...
Best BLT: Avenue B Grocery
"Walking over to the Avenue B Grocery, nestled in among houses in historic Hyde Park, is an adventure in itself. And going inside the grocery, which has been in operation for over 92 years, is a history lesson. But wandering past the bottles of Coke and bars of ice cream to
the deli counter and asking Ross Mason to make you up a BLT may be the smartest thing we do all week....We take a seat at one of the picnic tables, open the waxy paper, and dig in. There's no skimping at the Avenue B; three slices of bread are toasted and piled high, tomatoes are sliced thin, and there's plenty of bacon to keep you going on the walk home."
Most Beautiful Wall: The Wall Behind 4200 Avenue F
"Q: What do you get when you cement together stones, marbles, sea glass, champagne bottles, a sculpture of the Virgin Mary, colorful plastic figurines, a cognac bottle, plastic toys, a snow globe, shells, and chunks of coral? The most beautiful wall in Austin. Surrounding a garden we just wish we could call our own, the wall behind 4200 Avenue F is breathtaking. It tells a hundred stories, and most of them seem to involve champagne. Cheers!"
