It is with great anticipation that I look forward to the upcoming year. As the new Co-President of the Hyde Park Neighborhood Association, I know that I have some pretty big shoes to fill. As a neighborhood we have some important issues that have carried over from previous years. In addition to these, I think we need to focus our energies in some new areas.
Development, in all of its forms, is very important to me. In
order to keep our present quality of life and to preserve the charm of our
neighborhood we must continue to work on a number of fronts. The NCCD,
which was adopted by the city, is a good start. But it is just that - a
start. The NCCD zoning overlay only protects a portion of the area
covered by HPNA. "Upper Hyde

Park" still has no such protection. While efforts have been initiated to
enact an NCCD for our northern section, there is still a lot of work to do
(anyone interested in assisting in this effort please feel free to contact
me at: motorbruce@hotmail.com).
It isn't enough to simply have the zoning regulations on the books. I
think we have seen that it will take some effort to make sure that the
zoning is enforced. This will be a particular challenge due to the city's
tight budget.
I'd also like to address some other issues. Personally I would like HPNA to enjoy a greater level of participation from a wider range of folks in the neighborhood. As is typical of most neighborhood associations, most people become involved with their neighborhood association when a crisis arises (that is how I initially became involved). Rather than this reactive approach, I'd like to see the association initiate some programs which might engage the interest and involvement of a larger number of people than we have in the past. Exactly what will these programs be? Well, I don't know. I would, however, like to get some input from all of you. At the November HPNA General Meeting (on Monday, November 4, 2002, at 7:00pm, Hyde Park United Methodist Church) we are going to have an open forum to allow members to bring in their ideas and suggestions for the next year. I would like to see an increase in the number of active members we have. In addition, I'd

like some more fun, social activities, rather than concentrating all our
efforts on battles with the city or other parties.
As a final note, I want to remind everyone what the Hyde Park Neighborhood Association is and what it is about. The most important thing I would like to point out is that we are not a homeowners' association. Typically you will find homeowners associations in suburban, deed-restricted subdivisions. To be a member you must own a home there. Renters need not apply. This is not what the Hyde Park Neighborhood Association is about. The Hyde Park Neighborhood Association is made from everyone in the community around us. Membership is open to both homeowners
