Hyde Park Crime Report
by Bruce Nadig
Corrections Department:
Due to several factors I haven't had time to
write the usual crime report this month. I would, however, like to print a
correction to an item printed in the October crime report.
I received a sudden flurry of e-mail concerning my report of
an incident on Rowena Avenue. I had been told by the Austin Police
Department that a methamphetamine lab had been discovered in a house on
Rowena. This information was consistent with what I had been told by at
least one resident of that area. To the best of my knowledge, I have not
been given inaccurate information by APD in the past, so I believed this
information to be the truth. I had no reason to doubt what I had been told.
For the record, I do consider APD to be a reliable, credible information
source.
After receiving these e-mails I went back to APD for further
clarification. This is what I found. The federal Postal Inspector informed
APD that a drug-sniffing dog had alerted on at least one package that was
addressed to a house on Rowena. APD went to the house and spoke with one
resident. After this conversation APD requested, and received,

a search warrant for the property. Prescription medicine, narcotics and
some unidentified chemicals were found. To err on the side of caution,
the Austin Fire Department Hazardous Materials Unit was called to the
scene to clean up the site. APD's Bomb Squad and Clandestine Lab Team
were also called to the scene.
I had been told that a suspect was arrested. That also was
incorrect. The day that the search warrant was executed one of the
residents of the property voluntarily accompanied officers to APD
headquarters for questioning.
Subsequent laboratory tests found that none of the chemicals
were explosive and that the resident was not manufacturing drugs. However,
because prescription drugs and other narcotics were found on the property
an arrest warrant was issued for a suspect. The charges in the warrant
were for second-degree felonies. Ultimately the suspect turned himself
in.
In the original report I had no intention to misrepresent
any facts. Because I always strive for accuracy, I regret that I didn't
get it right the first time around. I hope that his clears up any
unintentional misunderstanding.
