Hyde Park Crime Report
by Bruce Nadig
First off this month we have an important
safety message from The University Of Texas Police Department.
The UT PD has been finding that people are walking their
dogs in the archery range area of the Intramural Fields. Because of the
obvious dangers of walking in and around an archery range, UT PD is
currently issuing criminal trespassing warnings to anyone they find in
this area. These warnings are being issued whenever anyone is found in
the area, not just when there are archers present. The archery range is
located at the far east end of the Intramural Fields. The range is
bordered by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department property on the
north, and Speedway to the south.
Officer Darrell Halstead, of the UT PD, explained
that they are not trying to be mean about this. This issue is strictly
driven by safety concerns and the liability the University would face
if there were to be an accident. Should you have any questions or concerns
regarding this issue, please contact Officer Halstead by phone at 232-9638,
or his supervisor Sergeant Van Horn at 232-9637.
In other news, Stan Kozinsky reported that around the
end of October he noticed that at least one of the Hyde Park cornerstones
had been stolen. As you probably know, these cornerstones can be found at
many intersections throughout the neighborhood. The one that he noticed had
been taken had been at the northwest corner of Speedway and 40th Street
(the Methodist Church parking lot). Stan also reported that he found one
other cornerstone had been turned around on its base.
Stan, who has made these cornerstones for HPNA at a bargain
rate, said that the cornerstones weigh in excess of 130 pounds. Obviously
it took the coordinated efforts of several people to steal the stone.
Please keep an eye out for anyone tampering with any of the cornerstones
located throughout the neighborhood. Should you see any suspicious activity
or know there the stolen stone can be found, please call the Austin Police
Department as well as an officer of HPNA.
One of the residents of Avenue A would like to remind
everyone to keep their doors locked at all times, even if you are working
in the yard or at home during the day. She reported that several weeks ago
she had been working in her yard. Just as she was entering the back of her
house she heard someone at the front door turning the doorknob and trying
to gain entrance. Fortunately, the door was locked. Keeping our doors
locked and carrying a key is much less painful than experiencing a
burglary.
I got another call recently that falls into the category of
"You learn something new everyday." A neighbor who lives
