"Early" and "Modern"

Do you suppose "early man",
As he fashioned his scraper and spear,
Ever paused at his labors
To call to his neighbors
A wish for a Happy New Year?

But why go so far back in Time
And wonder in some halting rhyme,
Whether he and his missus
Called out "Merry Christmas"
As they sought a more equitable clime?

Be that as it may
I welcome the day
In this modern and maddening whirl-To
follow the trend
And say to you, Friend,
Merry Christmas, now and for aye!
