eighbors of 603 Fairfield Lane in North Hyde Park starting calling me
in early February about a new duplex going in at this address.
Fairfield has always been a quiet somewhat isolated street until a
home was removed recently.

materialize last year, neighbors were very concerned! 707 was
permitted as a 6 bedroom duplex but apparently is being used as
10 bedrooms! The parking, all off of a one lane driveway, doesn't
work well for so many cars, so most of the tenants park in the
street. Neighbors of this area know what a traffic problem this
has caused. Neighbors also found out about a 10 bedroom duplex
going in at 505 E. 49th. A few days later, a permit was issued to
relocate a house at 4805 Duval to build another duplex. You can
see why neighbors were very concerned!
At the same time, a 12 bedroom (originally planned as 16 bedroom) duplex was begun at 3207 Hampton, across from Lee Elementary. A block north at 3403 Hampton lots were re-sub-divided for 4 more duplexes. Recently construction began on a 12-bedroom 3 1/2 story duplex at 3500 Duval. All of this activity got many neighbors upset and involved in finding solutions. The neighbors of the 3207 Hampton project filed an appeal to the Board of Adjustment questioning the city's interpretation of the code in issuing the permit. This appeal has stopped construction on the project until the case is heard on March 10. On February 6, Lane Harrell, Andy Homer, Bruce Nadig and I from Hyde Park and Colleen Daly from North University spoke to the City Council requesting a moratorium on Continued on page 5
