HPNA March Meeting: Fire Station #9 Dominates...
...cont'd from page 1

Reaction to this news was mixed and vigorous. Some viewed the compromise as a sensible reprieve, while others decried the loss of service. Some voiced the fear that this was the opening move by the City of a plan to eliminate the station altogether, while others pointed out that two firefighters could not enter and explore a burning building under the fire code's "same number outside as inside" rule. The City's position that the area could be served as well by surrounding stations was condemned as inaccurate by some, wildly apocryphal by most and another fine example of central city neighborhoods having services cut to help fund urban sprawl. A good time was had by all. Anyone interested in learning more is urged to contact Dave Szatchmary at mailto: dave@aveg.us.
A motion was made directing the HPNA leadership to write a letter to the City expressing the Association's desire to keep firefighter services in the area at their current level. There was some discussion about the leadership appointing an ad hoc committee to gather more information on the issue and move forward if a further course of action was deemed necessary.

Neighbors passed a motion ( some abstentions ) opposing an owner request for a variance reducing lot size in the 700 block of East 46th, and a motion ( some abstentions ) supporting an appeal by the City regarding occupancy rates for duplexes.

A resolution passed expressing the Hyde Park Neighborhood Association's desire to continue to work closely with the North University Neighborhood in keeping the areas bounded by Speedway and Interstate Highway 35 under single family zoning. The resolution ( some abstentions ) recognized the two neighborhoods historic and continued alliance in this area and addressed specifically HPNA's support for NUNA's efforts to prevent the removal of a home in the 300 block of East 38th street. HPNA leadership will express this resolve in a letter to the Austin City Council.
Debbie Volker reminded those present that help is still needed with the effort to survey Hyde Park North in anticipation of bringing it under the Hyde Park Neighborhood Combining & Conservation District, and former HPNA Co-President and Homes Tour Super Star Bob Breeze reminded neighbors that there is still time to volunteer your house ( or better yet, a friend's house ) for the fast approaching Hyde Park Homes Tour.
Bruce Nadig adjourned the meeting. Many stayed to chat and exchange more news.
