Look Up!

Look up, not down!
The blue canopy above is limitless, unmarred,
Save by one small cloud, far off,
Suspended in space like a magical carpet
Inviting.

Look up, not down!
The majesty of storm-dark clouds
Awes one to silence.
Shot through with lightning, white-hot;
Inspiring.

Look up, not down!
The storm has cleared the air,
Man's apprehension vanishes
And rainbows ring the earth with promise
Everlasting.

For a Friend Dying

There's not a lot to say:
victories are meaningless,
defeats are meaningless.
Time stretches out.
There's only dread and hope:
dread of nothingness,
hope of a hereafter.
In between, you watch TV
or play Monopoly.
No goals.
You want it over.
You want it to last forever.
You want the pain to stop.
You want to stay awake
so you won't miss anything.
You want to go to sleep
and forget everything.
You want.
You want.
You want
until
you want no more.
