Hyde Park Crime Report
by Bruce Nadig
I
haven't had enough time to write a full crime report, and fortunately,
we haven't had much crime to report. There is, however, on big
recurring pattern.
People are leaving valuables outside unattended, and
they are being stolen. I have received numerous reports of stolen
lawn mowers, a baby stroller, and other miscellaneous items. There
is one lesson we can learn from this: if something is of value to
you, keep it locked in a secure location. Any valuable items kept
outdoors should be considered fair game for thieves. It is
unfortunate that we have to live this way, but that is how it is.
If it is of value to you, keep it secured. Finally, be sure to
report ALL thefts and other crimes to the Austin Police Department.
APD keeps detailed crime statistics. These statistics are used to
allocate police resources to various neighborhoods throughout the
city. If we don't report our crimes, fewer and fewer APD resources
(patrol officers, detectives, etc.) will be assigned to our
neighborhood.
In short: keep it locked up, and if it disappears
report it to the police.
Notice of Postal Service Changes
O
n June 30 the letter carriers who serve Hyde ParkÕs 78751 zip
code are slated to be working out of the Central Park USPS
station on Lamar. The carriers who serve the twenty 78705 routes
will work from our North Austin station on Speedway. This is a
result of the crowded conditions at the North Austin
building, which can easily accommodate the fourteen 78705 routes.
The Central Park station will also house the 78703 carriers.
The only change for us as customers is that packages
that cannot be left without a signature will be taken back to the
Central Park station for us to pick up.
In order to avoid a trip there, we can call
1-800-275-8777 or use their web site at
www.usps.com to request a second home delivery or that the
package be sent to the North Austin station.
This information is courtesy of Barbara Pokorny
of the U.S. Postal Service. Postcards regarding this change should
have already arrived in your mail. Neighbors with questions or
concerns about these proposed changes are invited to contact
Ms. Pokorny at 342-1236.
