29th Annual Fire Station Festival Set for October 19

I n light of the recent decision to continue full services at Hyde Park's Fire Station #9, neighbors have particular reason to celebrate at this year's annual Fire Station Festival.

For the recently arrived, a bit of history: Way back in the mid-70's, the city of Austin was going to close the Fire Station #9 in Hyde Park, contending that other stations could cover the Hyde Park area and money was tight. Closing Station #9 may have made sense from the city's budget perspective, but it made no sense to the residents of Hyde Park. It was a bad idea for our neighborhood. And the residents of Hyde Park would not quietly agree with the city. The residents marshaled their forces and made their dissent known to the city council and the residents of Austin. Their hard work paid off and the fire station was saved.

If you are thinking that this "ancient history" sounds pretty familiar and recent, you are correct! Over the past several months, residents of Hyde Park and the hard working officials of our HPNA have once again helped to save Fire Station #9 -- this time, from reduction in capacity and possible closure. Both now and 29 years ago, the residents of Hyde Park were faced with a similar challenge. This year our wonderful Austin Firefighters gave up their annual raise to save our beloved station. So once again, we will gather at the station to celebrate their victory, and ours.

As is the custom, the festival will be kicked off with a children's parade through Hyde Park, starting at Shipe Park and ending at the Fire Station. WeĠre doing it again this year and we want to see every child in Hyde Park, along with their decorated bikes, trikes, wagons and strollers, in the parade. Here are the details:

Sunday, October 19, 2 P.M. (assemble beginning at 1:30 P.M. at the park) Parade Starts in Shipe Park along 44th Street Parade Ends at Fire Station #9, Speedway and 43rd Street Following the parade, there will be music, food and some Thank you's and memories on the fire station grounds.

So, on October 19th grab your kids and their bikes, strollers and wagons and head over to Shipe Park. This is a great event to meet your neighbors. AND it is a good time to join or renew your membership to the HPNA, which costs less than a latte at Quacks. Annual dues are $1 for individuals and $2 for families. Please use this time to join or renew your membership, because an active membership in our Neighborhood Association makes for a stronger voice for Hyde Park. Whether it is keeping our Fire Station, preserving the historic status of the neighborhood, improving Shipe Park, or any number of other worthy causes, our Association works hard for our residents and we'd love to have you join and become active in the Association.

Speaking of becoming active, this festival and parade cannot happen by itself. So, if you would like to help there are lots of opportunities. We'll need food for the festival at the station, help setting up and tearing down, help with decorating the parade and maybe some of our more talented neighbors would like to entertain us for a bit at the fire station.

So if you would like to help out please give me a call. Don't forget to come out on October 19th and celebrate our neighborhood. And don't forget your dues dollars. See you then!
