HPNA Wins Architects' Award
W e have received notice that the Hyde Park Neighborhood Association will receive a Citation of Honor from the Texas Society of Architects for its "contributions to the improvement of the built environment in Texas". This award will be conferred during the TSAs Annual Convention in Forth Worth on November First. AIA Austin, the local chapter of the American Institute of Architects, nominated the Neighborhood Association. The nomination and the award were based on HPNA's support for City and State historic designations for individual structures as well as the National Register District, preparation of a Neighborhood Plan, a set of Design Guidelines and the Neighborhood Conservation Combining District ordinance modifying City development rules for most of the neighborhood. The neighborhood's long struggle to keep the local 1928 fire station open was another factor, as was the recent construction of a decorative wall and arch in Shipe Park. HPNA's longtime support for the Park, the Elisabeth Ney Museum and the adjacent Austin State Hospital and its historic buildings also were cited in the nomination, as was the presentation of an annual Homes Tour for more than a quarter century. HPNA would like to thank the following neighbors and friends of the neighborhood for the letters they contributed in support of the nomination: Mary Collins Blackmon, Curator, Elisabet Ney Museum; Wendy Biro-Pollard, Community Relations Director, Austin State Hospital; James Ross, President, Talisman Group Inc.; Martha Campbell. We would also like to thank Lel Medford of AIA Austin and Wanda Penn, who prepared the nomination package.
