Fire Station Fest: 29 years of #9
H
yde Park Neighborhood Association celebrated its 29th birthday on a picture
perfect Sunday October the 19th. As Harry Pape, organizer of this year's
parade, filled balloons with helium and tied streamers on vehicles of every
description, neighbors from all over Hyde Park gathered at Shipe Park for
another great event.
Nothing like a parade.
Several hundred participants decorated their
tricycles, bicycles and wagons and
followed the Hyde Park Neighborhood Association banner carried by new
presidents Pam Whittington and Glen Coleman. As they arrived at Fire Station #9
these young citizens were greeted by a cheering crowd and tables full of
lovingly baked delights and refreshments. The band, Chaparral, lead by
Jeff Hughes (Broken Spoke/Thursday Night) was playing and the crowd was
gathering.
This year's festival was indeed important as the firemen were
honored for their efforts to save our station and others from the budget axe
by the unprecedented
|
action of declining their annual pay raise. Although the firemen of Station #9
were to be recognized individually, that became impossible when they had to
answer two calls in the one hour of presentations, showing again their need
in our neighborhood. Mike Martinez of the Austin Association of
Professional Firefighters was on hand and spoke of their effort to combat the
budget shortfall and how some of the money that was saved would go to some of
the volunteer service organizations that would otherwise have their funding cut
by the city.
The speechifying started with Master of Ceremonies and outgoing
president Bruce Nadig telling the story of the saving the fire station thirty
years ago and the founding of the Hyde Park Neighborhood Association. On hand
for the occasion were U.S. Representative Lloyd Doggett, County
Commissioner Karen Sonleitner, and County Constable Bruce Elfant.
