SPECIAL THIS MONTH: Glen Coleman and Pam Whittington co-author this article introducing themselves and discussing their goals for HPNA

We are excited to begin our term as Co-Presidents of the Hyde Park Neighborhood Association. We'd like to thank Gary Penn and Bruce Nadig for their service. Gary served two terms as Co-President and Bruce served one term as Co-President. When you see them, please join us in showing appreciation for their dedication and leadership.

My name is Glen Coleman and I want to thank y'all for the opportunity to serve as a leader in this organization. In some ways Hyde Park has always reminded me of the small Texas town of Junction where I grew up. There is a strong sense of community here; people know your name, wave

when they drive by and knock on the door if "it's been awhile". I moved to Hyde Park in 1995 and began delivering the Pecan Press for my block. In October of 2001 I was elected Secretary of Association. Many of you may know my daughter Ellie from our mornings in Shipe Park, and more and better children's services are a key goal of this administration. I look forward to meeting and working with you all.

Now it is Pam Whittington's turn.

My husband and I have lived in Austin since 1982 and in Hyde Park since March of 1998. We restored a 1919 Arts&Crafts home North of 45th Street, which was on the Homes Tour this past June. Hyde Park is very reminiscent of the small Texas town where I was raised. I love the variety of architecture and the tree-lined streets. I first became involved in HPNA when the "super-duplex" crisis erupted in Central Austin. I joined many of you working with the City of Austin to change the rules to help preserve our neighborhood. In doing so, I quickly learned that our neighborhood is filled with fun, intelligent, talented people. We have enjoyed socializing and getting to know our neighbors, so I regret that we waited to become involved with HPNA until there was a crisis.

Now that we have introduced ourselves, we'd like to share our goals for the next year. We have two over arching goals:
  • Enjoy our neighborhood and neighbors
  • Preserve and protect our neighborhood
There are many opportunities to have fun and enjoy the neighborhood and its neighbors.

Our monthly meetings are enjoyable and informative. There is an opportunity to catch up with our neighbors and to hear about what is coming up in the City that will affect us.

One of the main opportunities to enjoy our neighborhood is the Historic Hyde Park Homes Tour. In this event, we get a chance to visit with our neighbors and several the wonderful homes in our neighborhood. Of course, this is also
