Gary Penn and Bruce Nadig Dept.: Among the many noteworthy happenings at the Fire Station Festival on the 19th was the fact that, after two years of dedicated and accomplished service, Gary Penn and Bruce Nadig will be relinquishing their responsibilities as Co-Presidents of the Hyde Park Neighborhood Association. On behalf of the neighbors they have served so well, we'd like simply to say,

Thank You, Mr. Co-Presidents!

Chronicle to 'Hood Dept.: "You're #1!" As noted in a bulletin in last month's issue, Hyde Park copped "Best Neighborhood" honors in the Austin Chronicle's annual readers' poll. The citation read as follows:
"With century homes shouldered beside student rentals mixed in with some swanky renovated near-castles, Hyde Park is a terrific microcosm, highlighting the very things folks love most about Austin. What touches visitors and residents alike is the stunning, lush green everywhere you turn, with canopies of branches reaching high above and across streets to provide ample shade on even the most brutal August day. What's more, Shipe Park, Quack's, Avenue B Grocery, and the amazing wall on 42nd Street are all great reasons to celebrate this wacky, lovely community."

Welcome To Earth Dept.: Congratulations to Amon and Carol Burton of 4200 Ave. G -- who, thanks to the collaborative efforts of daughter Amy and son-in-law Brad, recently became proud grandparents of one Garrett Burton Smith, who made his planetary debut on August 12, 2003, weighing in at 8 lbs. 9 oz., and measuring up at 20 1/2 inches. In view of the fact that his mom is a physician, we are confident in predicting a very healthy as well as happy future for the new arrival.

Eastbound ad (p.s. Editor's note: Speaking of new arrivals, we've been seeing all kinds of baby carriages and strollers being tootled around the avenues of late, but we know much less than we'd like to about who their young occupants are, or where they live. Thus the Pecan Press would very much like to recruit a Nativity Reporter to cover this particular, and particularly happy, beat. So if there's a prospective volunteer out there who likes babies and knows how to write, let us hear from you!)
