Is the City Trashing its Recycling Service?

Dear Neighbors,

I am writing, because for the second time recently, I observed what I consider a serious matter on my morning walk to the post office.

I observed a regular City of Austin garbage truck taking the newspapers out of the blue recycle containers and then dumping the bottles and cans in the regular truck to take to the dump. A week or so ago I called the City waste department and was told that perhaps the recycle truck had called in sick and they were just doing their job. How can we expect for people to continue to recycle when the city just throws it in the dump?

Are other neighbors aware of this activity? Could the Neighborhood Association do anything? I certainly hope so, because we are very careful to separate and recycle. We recycle so much that we rarely have a full garbage container on pickup day. If other neighbors feel as I do, and see what I saw, I hope that they, too, will complain to the city.
