The National Register of Historic Places is part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate and protect our historic resources. The National Park Service maintains the National Register, which is administered in Texas by the Texas Historical Commission, the State Historic Preservation Office, and is part of its effort to promote preservation statewide. The National Register was developed to recognize historic places and persons who contributed to our country's heritage. See related article, "What is the National Register of Historic Places?" for additional information on the significance of National Register designation.

Another focus of the new committee will be to work with the City of Austin. Currently, the CityÕs Historic Landmark Task Force is working on its recommendation regarding City historic preservation requirements. Also, the City's Historic Landmarks Commission must review any proposed changes to properties within existing Historic Districts.
Also, many other neighborhoods in Central Austin are facing issues such has demolition or removal of existing structures to make way for more modern-appearing structures. This new committee will work with these other neighborhoods as appropriate.
If you are interested in participating on the Historic Preservation Committee, please call me at 452-9776 or send me an e-mail to the address below. I am excited about the opportunities to build upon the work and accomplishments that have already been achieved by the dedicated members of HPNA.
