Close To Home Dept.:
A
As this map, which appeared in a recent issue of the
American-Statesman, makes clear, folks in this part of town
will have reason to be particularly appreciative of the
exquisite illogicality -- except to Tom DeLay and his pals --
of the newly-proposed Texas congressional districts that are
now before the courts. Just think, neighbors -- if the
redistricting effort succeeds, you'll be able to grab a
sandwich at Avenue B Grocery, cash a check at Bank of America,
and head over to Central Market for a latte, and you'll have
visited three different congressional districts. Is this a
great country, state, city and neighborhood, or what??

I
n the last three decades of the 20th century Hyde Park resident
(and first president of the Hyde Park Neighborhood Association)
Merle G. Franke had a total of eight books published. Since we
are now in another decade, he felt it was once again time to
produce. This time two new books came out in early December.
STREETS AND ALLEYS WITH GOD is a series of prayers
written in free verse, following the seasons of the year and
of life. (Merle is an ordained pastor of the Lutheran Church.)
The second book, WILD ROSES IN A DITCH, departing from
the religious genre, is a series of short stories on early North
Dakota where Franke was raised. For the time being the books can
be obtained from Merle at his residence at 4102 Avenue D; his
phone number is 452-0414. The cost of each book is $9.95 plus sales tax.
