We are saddened to report the passing on January 21 of John Richard Lock -- who, along with his loving wife of 38 years, Sidney, restored, ran, and resided in the award-winning Adams House Bed and Breakfast at 43d and Avenue G. An accomplished attorney and devoted church member, John was wheelchair-bound in his later years, but this appeared to have limited neither his mobility nor his spirits. Noted a glowing tribute in the American-Statesman: "He was a mainstay of the Hyde Park neighborhood, ... where he is remembered both for his warm smile and countless orders of double espresso". Echoed friend and fellow B & B proprietor Herb Dickson of the Woodburn House: "They have been a wonderful addition to our neighborhood. John had ALS and was in an electric wheelchair, but it did not keep him down. You may have seen him at Quacks Bakery or Dolce Vita flirting with the girls and making friends. They all loved him. John will be missed. Please keep Sidney, their two daughters and family in your prayers". Amen.

Scholarship Scam Dept.: Sandra and Herb Dickson have asked us to alert neighbors to a bogus "scholarship" scheme that has claimed more than one victim. Several consumers have recently contacted the Attorney General's office to say that they paid $1000 to a company called the College Funding Center that promised to help find scholarship opportunities. The company has apparently gone out of business, and the consumers have gotten absolutely nothing for their money. Consumers who have made payments to the College Funding Center are advised to fill out the online consumer complaint form at www.oag.state.tx.us/consumer/complain.shtml. They are also advised to be leery of such scams in the future.

Good Friends Dept.: We heard recently from long-time Hyde Parker and HPNA Treasurer Emerita Josephine Casey, now residing at the Retirement and Nursing home at 6909 Burnet Lane (78757), as follows: "I'm trying for entries in the literature competition in the Nursing Home Games March 29th, but my eyesight may slow down my pen. Hopefully I can send something for Nancy Day to use. Her work is good!" So is yours, Ms. Casey -- Write on!
