Code Compliance Committee
T he Code Compliance Committee met in January to plan its goals for 2004. As a member of this committee from its inception and now as Co-President, I'd like to focus on the importance of this committee to the neighborhood. The goals of the committee are to educate neighborhood residents and property owners about compliance with City Codes, to provide a resource to help answer questions about various City Codes, and to work with property owners and the City of Austin to achieve compliance with City Codes, especially those affecting the health and safety of neighbors and those affecting the preservation of our neighborhood.
I believe that the Code Compliance Committee complements the goals
of the Development Review and Historic Preservation Committees. The
Development Review Committee provides assistance to current and
prospective neighbors in evaluating possible restoration, redesign,
or expansion in the area.

Development Review Committee members are available to help home
owners, potential home buyers and developers seeking to build,
restore, or buy in Hyde Park understand the NCCD and other zoning
codes. The new Historic Preservation Committee will work on
expanding the historic preservation designations and tools we
have in place today. The Code Compliance Committee will deal
with significant violations in areas such as zoning compliance
for existing property, building without a permit, abandoned
vehicles, and weeds and trash.
I believe that most of us are good neighbors and want to comply with the requirements of the codes. So, the main goals of this committee are to provide information to help educate us and to be a resource in these areas. In time, we hope to have information about these areas on our HPNA website and to publish articles on various code compliance topics in the Pecan Press. There are numerous City Codes, most of us are not familiar with their requirements, and many of us (unknowingly) probably have a minor violation or two on our properties. While of course, the law is the law, we all recognize that some laws are more important than others, and the committee plans not to concern itself with minor issues. Unfortunately, there are a few property owners who, knowingly or unknowingly, have significant violations that affect our health and safety and the preservation of our neighborhood. The committee will work with these owners to resolve these major problems and, if necessary, work with the City to achieve compliance.

Members of the committee are available to help answer any
questions you may have about your property and compliance
with the various City Codes. Alan Marburger is the Chairman of
this committee. Please call him if you would like to volunteer
to work on this committee or have a code compliance question.
(Also, I'd like to express my appreciation to Alan for serving as
the Homes Tour Committee Chairman this year. The Homes Tour is
very important to our neighborhood -- it is our main fund raising
event and an opportunity to share our wonderful neighborhood with
all of the City of Austin. Please call Alan to thank him for
taking on this endeavor and volunteer to help!)
