Dave Bolin ...cont'd from page 6
Dave remembers these last twenty years with fondness and was witness to all the change and transformation in Hyde Park during that time. He readily admits to enjoying chatting with his customers as real friends, watching their children grow up, and everyone grow older along with him. He viewed it as part of his service as a mailman to be pleasant and helpful to all his customers, and the people of Hyde Park responded in kind to his friendliness. Postal service in this quiet neighborhood had its share of excitement. There was the time Dave saw smoke coming out of the fire station, popped in to find a mop on fire in the kitchen, and all the firemen out on call. Then there were the expected dog bites (3), getting conked by a golf ball (1), and doing the route barefooted (which requires more explanation!). As for all of us, his customers, we no longer have an inside line to the neighborhood goings-on, a postman who drops in to check on UT ballgame scores, or someone who can personally find our lost mail. Especially with another long, hot summer coming up, Dave is enjoying his retirement by helping his wife with her day care center and spending more time with his grown children and their families. He says even dealing with two-year-olds is a pleasant change from the post office bureaucracy, although he misses his friends there and in the neighborhood. A celebration to honor Dave is being planned. For more information or to help, call Susan at 452-6890.
