C o-President Pam Whittington and I would like to take the opportunity to thank you for letting us serve in the leadership of the Hyde Park Neighborhood Association. It has been both an honor and a long strange trip.
I know of no other club or credible association in the city
that has its finger in so many pies or has a greater impact on so many
structures. Our NCCD has become a model for many of the area
neighborhoods. Our Planning Chairwoman has assisted countless
communities in shaping their own growth. Our State's 3rd Court of
Appeals will soon hand down a ruling concerning land use in Hyde
Park that will impact the City and probably alter the interpretation of
land use

statutes statewide. I know of no place so eclectic, so urban yet organic,
or that has such a keen sense of place about itself. It is wonderful to me
that we are among the most densely populated neighborhoods in the
City, and yet still, probably, the most densely shaded. Beyond a doubt
we are the most stubborn, and yet time and again we achieve consensus
in our direction. The Hyde Park Neighborhood Association is now in it 30th
year, and as Pam and I prepare to welcome John Kerr to the leadership
position we can report to him with confidence that the state of our
neighborhood is strong.
The year saw some significant victories. The reformation of Development Review Committee has allowed developers and property owners to make the neighborhood association their first stop when planning changes in the area. A great deal of time and expense has been saved over the last year for all parties, and the association has begun to restore some of the credibility with the City leadership that was lost in previous development disputes. Thanks here go primarily to Development Review Chairman Stan Kozinsky. Homes Tour Chairman Alan Marburger and a massive team of volunteers pulled off what may have been the greatest Homes Tour of all time. Suffice it to say that they have raised expectations for a long time to come and the impact on the association's financial position has been excellent. The association is financially sound and able meet the challenges of the new year. Under the guidance of new neighbor William Cook, the association has developed a Yahoo Groups list with well over 100 members. Thank you William!

Some opportunities were lost this year. I regret that the association was
unable to do more for children's services. Specifically, fundraising efforts
to keep Shipe Pool open longer never quite got off the ground. The alleys
are in good shape at this time, but it is evident that a lasting solution
to the alley problem has not been achieved. Finally, we have been unable
as an association to assist neighbors when their peace is broken repeatedly
late at night. These challenges remain.
