We are deeply saddened to report the death on
November 23, 2004, at the age of 97, of our good friend and long-time
neighbor Josephine
Casey. When we say "long-time" we mean just that; for as was pointed out
in a lengthy and laudatory obituary in the American Statesman, Josephine
was in residence in the family home on 38th Street from 1913 to 1998
-- when, shortly after the death of her older and equally distinguished sister
Bertha, she relocated to the Retirement and Nursing Center on Burnet Road. And
when we say "good friend" we also mean just that -- a friend to so many folks
at her alma mater UT, where she worked honorably and well for over 45 years, and

which, at the direction of UT President Larry Faulkner,
lowered its flags to half-staff in her honor this past
December 17th; at University United Methodist Church,
where she worshipped, sang and served for over 60
years; and of course, with the Hyde Park Neighborhood
Association, which she served as Treasurer for 16 years.
And we mean "Treasurer" in several senses -- not only
in taking impeccably honest and systematic (and non-
computer-aided) care of the Association's books, but
also in treasuring (and exemplifying) the sense of
neighborliness and involvement that has long been a
central feature of life in Hyde Park.
At a November 30th Memorial Service at the Weed-Corley Funeral Home on Lamar, there were multiple heartfelt tributes to Ms. Casey: Among them was a staff member from the Retirement and Nursing Center, who confessed, "We're not supposed to have favorites at the RNC, but she was"; and who recounted how, at the age of 97 and spurred by a string of previous second-place finishes, Ms. Casey won the citywide Capital Nursing Games spelling contest. Another was a memorial sermon which suggested that if one word might constitute the trunk from which the various branches of her rich and happy life emanated, that word would be Loyalty.
