guava, ginger, and roasted hazelnuts which were more than
a match for the off putting low notes of anchovies and AlkaSeltzer.
The finish was big and smooth, but not without the
unexpected; somewhat like running your hand over a broad
expanse of satin and encountering a zipper. The aftertaste
was all ripe Camembert, with grace notes of honey, mint,
white pepper, clove, and plenty of chocolate.
The harmony which this symphony of tastes, textures,
and colors achieved was beyond praise. I had a vivid, hyper-real
sensation that I had swallowed the entire Gabrieli
String Quartet playing Hayden. The impression, which
lasted several seconds, was so intense I couldn't decide
whether to applaud, sit down and marvel, or seek immediate
medical attention. This had never happened before. I can't
explain it, but the possibility that I was having my second
mini-stroke of the evening cannot be discounted.
I look forward to more encounters with this ruddy
Tuscan charmer in the future. But in all honesty I cannot
recommend it for next year's party. The whole point of a
party is social intercourse. And by the time I had registered
and reflected on all of this wine's abundant impressions,
explored the peaks and valleys (and numerous quirks) of its
manifold personality, and compared it to other Sangioveses
I have known, there really wasn't much time left to talk to
anybody."
I guess this goes to show that one man's wine is
another man's labyrinth.
