Proper and Sensible Disposal of Obsolete Electronics

Dear Neighbors,

If you haven't given much thought to what happens to your old computers, cell phones, and other worn-out electronic gizmos, perhaps you should. How come? Well....

  • Too many obsolete computers and cell phones are piling up in landfills and becoming potential waste hazards.
  • Many people simply don't know about their options to dispose of their old electronics properly.
  • This explains what you can do to help.
Studies show that 500 million used cell phones currently stored away in closets and drawers will eventually end up in landfills, where releases of the many toxic materials they contain create threats to human health and the environment. Imagine soaking your cell phone in a glass of drinking water and then drinking the water!

That is what happens when old cell phones, computers and other household electronics end up in landfills. There are many heavy metals contained in cell phones and computers and they can become unleashed in to our groundwater, contaminating our water supply.

ERT (Electronic Recycling and Trading) of central Austin works with individuals, schools, corporations and other community associations to make recycling electronics as easy as possible. You can call them (512) 927-2300 x 315 for more information or to set up a recycling drive with your business or organization.

Best Regards,
