"Front Porch Friendly" T his year's Hyde Park Homes Tour, the Association's 30th Annual, will be similar to last year's, in that it will be a walking tour -- that is, only if you don't want to take a horse-drawn carriage ride with the most entertaining characters of Hyde Park. The price of a ticket this year will include the horse-drawn transportation across the first streetcar neighborhood in Austin. Back in the early days of the neighborhood, Monroe Shipe and Elisabet Ney traveled these streets pulled by their hardy steeds, and we get to celebrate and relive that custom 114 years later. Among many other highlights, there will be a treasure hunt for old and young that will start at Baker School and end at the Ney Museum. Musicians and story tellers will abound. This "Front Porch Friendly" tour will start at the front steps of Baker School, 3900 Avenue B. The carriages will be available, but the first home is only a hundred yards away. At 209 W.39th Street is the Sears King House. The house is entered through a dramatic stained glass front door. Inside, spacious living and dining areas are separated by French Doors.
