Hyde Park Neighborhood Association
General Meeting Minutes: May 2, 2005
O
n the evening of Monday, May 2,
President John Kerr called the May 2005
meeting of the Hyde Park Neighborhood
Association to order.
Margot Clarke, candidate for City Council Place
3 made a short presentation about her candidacy. She
also encouraged all of us to vote in the upcoming City
election.
Karen McGraw discussed the pending NCCD for
the North neighborhood. The City is planning another
meeting to discuss the specifics of the NCCD. First
action by the Council is scheduled for June 23.
John Kerr made a couple of announcements.
A meeting to discuss pedestrian, bicycle and
transit issues for the Triangle Transportation Study will
be held May 10. Also, the ASHDASH 5K for Mental
Health '05 will be held on May 22.
Jamie Caras, Chairman of the Sidewalk Com-
mittee, reported on the plans for adding sidewalks
to the neighborhood. Sidewalks run about $18 per
linear foot for 4.5 foot wide sidewalks. Ramps cost
between $350 and $650. The plan for paying for the
sidewalks is that the property owner would pay one-half
and HPNA would pay one-half. The City and
Capitol Metro would pay for all of the ramps. At this
point the plans include adding 750 linear feet of side walks
and HPNA's one-half is estimated to be $6,750.
Therefore, the committee asked that $7,000 be provided
for this effort. Sidewalks planned to be completed
this summer are: 4309, 4201, and 4100 Avenue F; 4101
Speedway; 4013 and 4011 Avenue D; and 3900-3910
Avenue C. Further, the committee reported that these
plans are the initial phase and that they are working
on plans to add more sidewalks to the neighborhood.
Merle Franke made a motion to approve the requested
$7,000 and VR Whittington seconded the
motion. The motion passed without opposition.
Mike Powers requested that HPNA support a
variance request on his property at 701 East 46th
Street. After a lengthy discussion, members voted to
oppose his request.
Merle Franke raised a concern about the recycling
being dumped in with the regular trash by some solid
waste workers.
Stan Kozinsky reported that Landmark Commission
recommended to the City Council that Brown's
Flower Shop at 43d and Ave. A be designated as an
historic building.
John Kerr adjourned the meeting.
