Crime Report
by Hermelinda Zamarripa
T
he police department is gearing up for
National Night Out, a special night
dedicated to making neighborhoods safer. It
is designed to:
- heighten crime and drug prevention awareness,
- generate support and participation in anti-crime efforts,
- strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community relations, and
- send a message to criminals letting them know
that residents are organized and fighting back.
Participation amongst neighborhoods varies. I've
seen large neighborhood association gatherings that
featured musicians, door prizes, giveaways, games,
contests, an art show, and, of course, food to more
intimate settings, where hospitality and friendship
abound. Whatever size, the purpose behind the program
is to encourage folks to come out of their homes,
meet their neighbors and organize to fight crime.
Based on what I've been hearing, this appears to be a
good time to make and solidify relations for the good
and safety of the neighborhood.
Those desiring representatives from APD, EMS or
the Austin Fire Department to show up at their shindig
are strongly encouraged to submit a request by
July 1 to Rosie Salinas, Austin Police Department,
P.O. Box 689001, 78768-9001. For more information on
National Night Out or to register a party, please call
974-4900.
At home, personal crime continues to climb, while
property crime remains stable. Of the 30 incidents listed
between mid-April to mid-May, twice as many
offenses were recorded under property crime.
Of particular concern were two rapes that were
reported a handful of days apart. One occurred April 28
at a residence in the 4300 block of Avenue A, the other
on May 3 in the 3800 block of Avenue B. However,
both cases were determined to be unfounded, according
to our Officer Ricardo Vargas.
The crime log listed the following six assaults:
- an aggravated assault - punishable by up to two
years in state jail and a maximum fine of up to
$4,000,
- two assaults with injury - considered a Class A
misdemeanor, which carries a fine or no more
than 180 days in jail and a fine of up to $2,000,
- assault by contact family/dating violation - also a
Class A misdemeanor,
