Untitled
On a drizzly April morn
I spied a kingfisher
With billowing wings and chest
she rose
from the branch
by the creek
As I walked on
her image caressed my cheek
and opened my heart
to
spring.
-- Marie Nelson, 5008 Eilers Ave.

The Second Self
the one that watches the
first one so it doesn't do
anything to give the game
away -- like call a cab and
then not remember your address,
call people by the wrong
name or smile when you're told
someone died; all those
little details that keep
things going without any
blips. Because there are
blips everywhere just waiting
to happen and that first you
are blip prone. That's why
you invented a second self --
to take care of the details,
to cover the blips.
-- Albert Huffstickler, June 2000

Today
We take deep breaths
We watch the clouds
We watch the sparkle
of rain on blades of lemon grass
We feel moisture dewing
on our skin
We feel moisture from inside
too, from anxious sweat
We know we are alive
We wonder what next
and then another drop of moisture
this from a weeping Crape Myrtle
We take deep breaths
We watch the sun finish today
We wonder what next
and moonlight falls
like sifted rain
on our hearts
We take deep breaths
and wait for what is next.
