NeWorlDeli: A Real Good Neighbor
T he Hyde Park Homes Tour does a great job of acquainting Austin with its oldest suburb. And in fact, the tour helps many of the neighbors get acquainted with each other. This is especially true at the after party that traditionally follows the close of the tour late Sunday afternoon.
For the last several years the
celebration has been held at New World
Deli at Guadalupe. The congenial space and wonderful food really
make the party. But few neighbors know the personality behind this
happy event and the work that goes into it.
Normally the Deli is closed
Sunday afternoon. But owner Greg Bontempo kept it open and,
together with his wife Sarah and their three daughters Claire,
Abbey and Emma, ages 5 to 13, spent the entire afternoon
cleaning, chopping, slicing, sautéing, baking and arranging items
for a terrific buffet. The lasagna and savory eggplant parmigiana were

made from scratch only hours before they were served. I was impressed
with the thoroughness with which 5-year-old Emma polished a serving
dish. And I was grateful Greg never let us run out of fresh salmon.
No doubt Greg would have enjoyed taking the afternoon off. Earlier in the day, he and his eldest daughter Claire competed as a team in the Father's Day Urban Assault Race, which included a grueling 20-mile bicycle race. Long after our party broke up, the Bontempos were cleaning up after us and preparing the deli for opening the next morning. In truth, the total effort and expense were a donation from Greg. All the Deli received in return was a 1.5" x 3.75" portion of a homes tour booklet ad for the Hyde Park Marketplace. It shared the ad with three other tenants and the Marketplace itself. Greg grew up working in his father 's deli in New Providence, New Jersey. He became acquainted with Hyde Park when he came to Austin to attend UT and lived on Harris Avenue near Lee School. After college he tried different jobs in different places but returned to Austin 10 years later. By then he wasn't able to afford a home in Hyde Park but he did succeed in establishing a successful deli and catering service here which celebrated its 8th anniversary on June 28. Beginning in September, the deli will be licensed to serve wine and beer and plans to start serving dinner. We are extremely fortunate to have Austin's best delicatessen within walking distance, and we are proud to number among our neighbors Greg Bontempo and his hardworking family.

Progress on the graffiti front: Two
taggers who have messed up Hyde Park for a long time have been apprehended
by the police and are now in the court system. Known by their graffiti
tags as "Gomer" and "Vomit," the two are scheduled for a plea
bargaining session on July 25. The neighborhood association will recommend
stiff penalties for the two and provide prosecutors with photographs
documenting how badly these vandals disfigured Hyde Park.
The HPNA web site will soon be undergoing renovation. One of the additions is expected to be a section with neighbors' recommendations for various goods and services, taken from our Yahoo list serve. If you have a suggestion for improving the web site, please drop a line to webmaster George Wyche, gwyche@io.com, or to web designer Robin Silberling, robin@wcook.org, who is working with George.
