June 2005 HPNA General Meeting Minutes
I
n the absence of President John Kerr, Co-Secretary Denise Girard
called the general meeting of the Hyde Park Neighborhood Association
to order at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, June 6, 2005.
Mark Wieland with the City of Austin Water Conservation
Program promoted various programs for using water wisely. He emphasized
using rainbarrels and rainwater harvesting. Specially designed
rainbarrels that hold 75-gallons of water each are available from the
City to City of Austin water customers for a reasonable
price. The next sale is June 25 and subsequent sales will
be in the fall. For more information, call 974-2199 or visit
www.cityofaustin.org/watercon.
Next, Kevin Walker, a location specialist with the Texas Film
Commission, discussed how the Commission works with filmmakers. The
Texas Film Commission, part of the Governor's Office, promotes Texas
as a film location. Kevin showed sample location folders which are
used to promote various locations and areas of the state
to location scouts. The rule of thumb is that, for a given
film, the filmmakers leave about 1/2 of the film's budget
behind in purchases made in the state. Kevin noted that
they frequently get calls about filming in Hyde Park. He
said that many times the filmmakers are looking for locations
for period movies, and that Hyde Park is especially
good for this purpose. He suggested that if any neighbors
have questions about filming in Hyde Park, to call his
office (463-9200) or go to the website at
www.texasfilmcommission.com.
Margot Clarke, candidate for City Council Place 3,
encouraged all of us to vote in the run-off election Saturday, June 11.
She asked for support in the election.
Elaine Meenehan gave an update on the graffiti clean-
up in the neighborhood. She had anti-graffiti solvents
available for neighbors to take with us to use to clean up
around our homes. Thanks to Elaine for heading up this
effort.
Alan Marburger gave an update on this year's Homes
Tour. He solicited volunteers for various positions including people to
serve as docents and to help with clean up.
The tour, HPNA's annual fund raiser, is held on Father's
Day weekend. Many thanks to Alan and the committee.
Finally, Mary Carolyn George of 4312 Ave. H made
a creative and dramatic proposal for the neighborhood.
Currently, Avenue G between 44th and 45th Streets is
