Good Chairman Dept.: Without any doubt, one of the most
arduous and thankless tasks on the roster of HPNA volunteer
opportunities is that of Homes Tour Chair. Considering the mul-
tiplicity of tasks involved, and the hundreds of volunteers to be
recruited, deployed, and overseen, it's a wonder that anyone ever
volunteers to serve as ringmaster for such a circus. It's also a tribute
to Hyde Park's "can-do" spirit that every year now for thirty years,
some worthy soul has been kind/crazy enough to step up to the
plate. Thus as post-event kudos are being passed out in the wake of
this year's Tour, we would like to direct a message of particular ap-
preciation to Alan Marburger who not only served ably as Chair
of this year's Tour, but was repeating his performance as Chair of
last year's Tour! So, on behalf of the neighborhood he has served so
well, and the many neighbors he has led so well, we would like to
say, Thank You, Mr. Chairman!
Good Neighbor Dept.: We would like to echo the message
of appreciation in HPNA Prez John Kerr's column this month
directed to Greg Bontempo, proprietor of the NeWorlDeli in the
Hyde Park Marketplace at 41st and Guadalupe, which hosted this
year's post-Tour party and dinner for homeowners and volunteers.
Given that Greg and his family work very long and hard hours
already, and that Sunday is his only day off, we are sure that the
LAST thing he was in the mood to do was open the deli and
prepare food and drinks for a bunch of neighbors, many of whom he
doesn't even know. So to Greg, his wife Sarah, and their three
lovely daughters, we would like to offer a hearty "Thank You!"; and to
neighbors, a hearty enouragement to patronize the NeWorlDeli
enthusiastically and often.
Good (or at least interesting) Idea Dept.: At the June HPNA
meeting, Mary Carolyn George of 4312 Ave. G made what was
termed a "creative and dramatic" proposal that the current con-
struction-driven closure of the 4400 Block of Avenue G be made
permanent. William Cook of 4211 Avenue F, who ably manages
HPNA's yahoo newsgroup, conducted an informal poll on the
idea, and of the 52 respondents, over 50% reported a positive first
impression of the proposal. (See article in this issue.) So, here's
hoping, and thinking, that there will be further exploration of the
idea; and here's thanking Mary Carolyn for bringing it up in the
first place!
Farewell, Mr. Foster: We are saddened to report the recent
passing of Robert Coleman (R.C.) Foster, Sr., a long-time
resident of 3808 Avenue H. Mr. Foster moved to Austin from San
Antonio in 1939, and according to the Statesman obituary, "He
walked every step of the way." 88 years old at the time of his
death, Mr. Foster was among the eminently memorable characters
of Hyde Park. We shall long and fondly remember his nightly
strolls through the neighborhood, puffing an ever-present stogie,
bouncing a decrepit tennis ball, and never, ever being too busy to
stop for a neighborly chat. Along with many other neighbors and
friends, we shall miss him.
