Great Kindness Challenge at Trinity UMC

Posted in Past Events on August 1st, 2011 by lisaharris – Comments Off

Our neighbors at Trinity United Methodist Church invite us to participate in The Great Kindness Challenge on Saturday August 13th. This is a project of an organization called Kids for Peace. The event is one day dedicated to performing as many acts of kindness as possible, utilizing a checklist provided by Kids for Peace which has around 50 simple things folks can do to spread the message “Kindness Matters.”

The schedule of events for the day includes making treats and taking them to the fire station on Speedway; making sack lunches to distribute to homeless people on Sunday morning (under the I35 bridge at 7th St.); learning to say “thank you” in multiple languages, then thanking a bus driver, a police officer, hopefully an elected official, and a lifeguard; walking the neighborhood to pick up trash and leave sidewalk chalk hearts and messages of peace and kindness; and holding a “flash mob” happy dance at Shipe Park.

Come share a grilled burger, Casey’s Snowballs, and watermelon with your neighbors, take a refreshing dip in the pool, and learn about the city’s proposal to CLOSE SHIPE POOLS.

Our hope to is to gather a huge and supportive crowd to the pool area at 4pm next Saturday to express the public support for our neighborhood pool. This is an opportunity to make a clear statement that our neighborhood parks are essential to our experience of community in Austin. Please help spread the word about this event to your friends and neighbors. Forward the attached flier liberally.

Neighbors wishing to get information & participate in an effort to keep the pools open are encouraged to join the yahoo group “Friends of Shipe Pool ” which is spearheading numerous efforts to improve Shipe Park, including the mosaic project currently being installed on the pump house wall.

more info on Shipe Pool and Bruning

Posted in News, Past Events on May 27th, 2011 by lisaharris – Be the first to comment

The possible budget cut that would close the Shipe pool would not affect this year’s operations but summer 2012. Thanks to Mark Fishman to getting to the bottom of that.

I asked a few follow-up questions of the transportation dept regarding Bruning. I learned that travel delay time is measured by driving with other cars along the corridor a few times. Travel time runs are only scheduled to be done on 51st St. itself- there are currently no plans to examine whether there are increased delays on alternate routes so the assessment of success or failure will be based on the effects of the closure on 51st St. traffic.
