The 2012 Hyde Park Homes Tour is just one week away! This year’s tour takes place on Veteran’s Day – Sunday, November 11th from 11am to 5pm. The theme this year is “Hyde Park: Reinvented, Rewarding, and Real.” The seven houses it debuts illustrate how seven individuals and families have adapted vintage houses to contemporary living and have reinvented Hyde Park as a place to raise children and pursue a variety of up-to-the-minute careers.
Check out the new Homes Tour website at www.hydeparkhomestour.org. Tickets are $20 and can be bought through the website, using a credit card or PayPal account, or on the day of the tour at the Trinity United Methodist Church, where the tour begins. Parking is in the church parking lot across the street from the church. Child care will be available at the church. See you there!!

Our neighbors at Trinity United Methodist Church invite us to participate in The Great Kindness Challenge on Saturday August 13th. This is a project of an organization called Kids for Peace. The event is one day dedicated to performing as many acts of kindness as possible, utilizing a checklist provided by Kids for Peace which has around 50 simple things folks can do to spread the message “Kindness Matters.”
The schedule of events for the day includes making treats and taking them to the fire station on Speedway; making sack lunches to distribute to homeless people on Sunday morning (under the I35 bridge at 7th St.); learning to say “thank you” in multiple languages, then thanking a bus driver, a police officer, hopefully an elected official, and a lifeguard; walking the neighborhood to pick up trash and leave sidewalk chalk hearts and messages of peace and kindness; and holding a “flash mob” happy dance at Shipe Park.
Our neighbors in Hancock invite us to celebrate the 4th with them at 9 AM at Lee Elementary.
June 25th 4 to 6pm.
Come share a grilled burger, Casey’s Snowballs, and watermelon with your neighbors, take a refreshing dip in the pool, and learn about the city’s proposal to CLOSE SHIPE POOLS.
Our hope to is to gather a huge and supportive crowd to the pool area at 4pm next Saturday to express the public support for our neighborhood pool. This is an opportunity to make a clear statement that our neighborhood parks are essential to our experience of community in Austin. Please help spread the word about this event to your friends and neighbors. Forward the attached flier liberally.
Neighbors wishing to get information & participate in an effort to keep the pools open are encouraged to join the yahoo group “Friends of Shipe Pool ” which is spearheading numerous efforts to improve Shipe Park, including the mosaic project currently being installed on the pump house wall.
4400 Avenue G.
PS – We need volunteers in a few areas for this event – work the grill for an hour, help with set-up or clean-up, manage the food table, etc. Let me know if you’re willing to help next Saturday before, during or after the event. Thanks!
UPDATE: Since this is a city-permitted event, we can’t host a potluck this year, so please do not bring home prepared foods. Suggested donation for food costs is $5.
