Local Historic District Update
Too often we have been threatened with the loss of Hyde Park's houses. In some cases, these were significant historic structures that could have been designated Austin landmarks. In others they were modest homes that contributed to the character and diversity that is Hyde Park.
HPNA has hired Terri Myers of Preservation Central to do the survey part of the application process to make Hyde Park into a recognized Local Historic District. 51% of the houses in the designated area will need to be contributing structures. Terri and her assistants feel that most of Hyde Park will qualify for that. Terri’s familiarity with Hyde Park will give her a head start in working on this.
Another requirement is that 60% of the property owners need to sign on. This may be a challenge, especially in areas that have many absentee owners. We will need the help of neighbors.
The City of Austin has been slow to provide for local historic districts to protect our neighborhoods. Now that we have the opportunity, we must take advantage of it to preserve the fabric of this neighborhood that so many of us love.
