The following letter will be printed in the upcoming July edition of the Pecan Press, from the Griffin School’s Adam Wilson, related to the July 7th vote:
Dear Neighbors,
Last month, I shared Griffin School’s desire to evolve in the neighborhood with a main-site-plus-nearby-satellites campus design. This is the way the school hopes to continue to thrive as a school, a cultural center, and as a community asset in Austin.
In order to grow, the school has asked the neighborhood association to vote on changes to the restrictive covenant that exists between Griffin School and HPNA. This vote was originally scheduled for June, but the school agreed to delay it in order to further discussions we were having with some of our immediate neighbors. Those discussions have been productive and meaningful.
The summary of key edits to the agreement are:
● Increasing but not eliminating the enrollment cap on our main campus from 125 to 175 students (note: as of the press deadline, this amendment remains part of the active discussion between the school and its immediate neighbors)
● Adding to the document a commitment already in practice that school students and staff do not park on the streets immediately surrounding the main campus
● Eliminating specific student disciplinary terms that are listed in the existing agreement
● Eliminating the requirement of a letter of credit from the school to enforce the agreement
● Maintaining all existing traffic and parking requirements in the agreement
These changes will be voted upon at the July 7th HPNA meeting, and I am asking for neighbors to attend and vote to support this new agreement. I will post to the neighborhood email listserv the amended restrictive covenant document showing all of the changes that have resulted from our discussions with neighbors.
Thanks to all of the neighbors who have engaged graciously with us in this dialogue about how to give us the agency to evolve and thrive in this wonderful neighborhood. Thanks for your engagement and support!
